VILNIUS, Lithuania — Empowering blondes or stereotyping them?
The jury is out on a Lithuanian company that plans to build a "fantasy resort" staffed only by blondes in the Maldives.
For openers, the BBC said, there were suggestions it could be seen as discriminatory by potentially excluding non-white Maldivian staff while local laws require resorts to hire at least 50 percent local staff. In Lithuania, a member of the EU, there are questions about whether a blonde-only hiring policy would violate EU employment laws.
Olialia is run and staffed by blonde women, and already operates in 75 different business sectors, making products from computer software and food products to pop music
Anuseviciute dismissed such concerns. "It is not discrimination," she said. "For example, if a ballet is casting for a male-only dance performance, is it discrimination against women when they only hire men?
"The same with our resort – everyone will be welcome to work but will have to wear this uniform," Anuseviciute said.
