A Gulf of Mexico oil rig exploded Thursday morning, sending its crew of 13 scrambling into the water 92 miles off the coast of Louisiana, the Coast Guard said.
One person was injured after an explosion on an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay, the U.S. Coast Guard said. It happened around 9 a.m., and as of 10:15 a.m., the platform was still burning, Chief Petty Officer John Edwards said. Rescue crews from New Orleans and Houston responded.
The Vermilion Oil Rig 380, which is owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy, was not actively producing any product, but officials could not confirm if there will be any resulting pollution.
